Marketing Outreach Specialist Fellowship

The Marketing Outreach Specialist is an integral part of the Communications, Marketing and Engagement (CME) unit at Lutheran World Relief (LWR). The position supports the unit’s efforts to provide leadership in communication strategy and key message development for engaging LWR’s target U.S. audiences and to create high-quality, effective, engaging and audience-centric communication tools that build LWR’s relationship with its audiences. This is a full-time, paid, two-year position.

  1. In coordination with the Associate Director, Communication Strategies and Services, serve as the project manager for the Visibility, Outreach and Engagement (VOE) team’s external communications projects. This includes developing timelines, workflow process, distribution/promotion plans and expected outcomes.
  2. As a member of LWR’s Interactive Media Team, support LWR’s social media strategy by monitoring Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, drafting and posting daily content, and planning and executing social media engagement/fundraising campaigns.
  3. Assist in the planning, drafting and editing of LWR communications, including the print newsletter, email newsletter, website, blog and external reports.
  4. Communicate with constituents via email, postal mail, and phone to answer their questions, encourage, and affirm them in their participation in LWR projects.
  5. Support CME in developing and implementing campaigns to engage our audiences, especially Lutherans in the U.S., in LWR’s work.
  6. Coordinate and manage technology for unit presentations.
  7. Facilitate workshops and presentations; assist in writing and preparation of event materials.
  8. Represent LWR at events and congregations.
  9. Assist with enhancement and maintenance of constituent and Ingathering (local quilt and kit collections) databases.
  10. Manage the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza.
  11. Manage the Quilt & Kit Tracker, including promotion, monthly acknowledgements, and system maintenance and troubleshooting.
  12. Assist with relationship management of LWR’s Key Leaders, a national group of volunteers who coordinate local collections of quilts and kits.
  13. Champion the LWR brand by adhering to style guidelines and ensuring staff follow guidelines so audience experience is consistent and exceptional.
  14. Engagement in ongoing professional development.
  15. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  1. Deep commitment to LWR’s core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in English, communications or related field. One year of professional experience preferred.
  3. Exceptional written and oral communication skills essential. Ability to distill and interpret complex program information and write clean, concise and compelling copy for a general audience.
  4. Experience writing and messaging on behalf of a nonprofit, preferred.
  5. Exceptional project management skills.
  6. Keen attention to detail.
  7. Excellent people skills (including via telephone).
  8. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  9. Experience using social media channels for business, especially Facebook and Twitter.
  10. Proficiency in standard computer software (Microsoft Office Suite).
  11. Database experience a plus.
  12. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  13. Domestic travel up to 5%.           
  14. Ability to articulate and integrate overseas humanitarian, development and justice concerns with one’s faith; able to assist others to consider such connections.
  15. Commitment to working in a very diverse workforce.
  16. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and follow through on projects and policies; good organization skills and the ability to manage a variety of tasks productively.
  17. Creativity, imagination, problem-solving skills and the ability to adjust direction and strategies
  18. Familiarity with Lutheranism, church structures and church member motivations and sensitivities preferred.
  19. Familiarity with INGOs, fundraising and international development/humanitarian crises.
