Campaign Director, Lutheran Malaria Initiative

Description:The Campaign Director, LMI, is responsible for development, implementation and achievement of the benchmarks of the joint campaign plan of the U.S. based portion of the Lutheran Malaria Initiative. This position is based in Baltimore, MD.

S/he will work closely and collaboratively with relevant staff of the two partners, LWR and LCMS, and with other members of the dedicated Lutheran Malaria Initiative team, as well as with relevant staff of the United Nations Foundation.

Duties: 
  1. Develop and implement strategic campaign plans (including, but not limited to PR and marketing) to promote the Lutheran Malaria Initiative to Lutheran congregations, key constituencies (like LWML, Lutheran schools, camps, etc), and individuals in the United States.
  2. Work with LWR LMI Lead (VP for ER) and LCMS LMI Lead to lead the campaign team in identifying and setting highly measurable goals and targets as well as developing strategies, timelines and operational plans and functions for the campaign.
  3. Determining when goals are at risk of not being met, identifying the causes and, when needed, taking appropriate steps to fix any problems.
  4. Organizing and facilitating information flow between LMI consultants, LMI outreach/fundraising/campaign staff; LWR and LCMS US-based program staff, and LMI international program staff.
  5. Develop and refine communication standards and protocols for how the LMI partners collaborate regarding communication and engagement in the US about the initiative.
  6. Working with internal and external consultants for graphic design, web development and video production, oversee the development and implementation a visual identity for the initiative, a website and frequently updated short informational videos that can be shared among all partners. (This work is done in conjunction with the Outreach Manager and staff of LWR and LCMS.)
  7. In collaboration with LMI donor services, working to ensure that relationships with current and potential LMI donors are identified, built and maintained.
  8. Serve as primary media contact for the initiative and/or engage appropriate personnel/volunteers in media work and promote the initiative to both secular and religious media.
  9. Working with the VP for ER, campaign counsel, and LMI outreach coordinator ensure that key LWR and LCMS staff and consultants and volunteers are engaged in appropriate LMI work (especially through key LMI contacts - VP for ER and LCMS Director for the Campaign).
  10. Representing LMI publicly at conferences, events and official forums as well as assisting key LMI staff in authoring and placing articles for newspapers, magazines and other outlets.
  11. Establish effective metrics to measure success of the malaria initiative pilot activities and communication/engagement products.
  12. Use lessons learned during pilot period to determine best practices and optimal mix of marketing and engagement tools and tactics to promote the initiative when it launches nationwide (done in conjunction with campaign counsel and outreach manager).
  13. Other job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  1. Deep commitment to LWR's, LCMS' and LMI's core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
  2. A Masters degree in a relevant area, or equivalent experience.
  3. Broad knowledge of marketing, PR and communication tactics. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  4. Minimum of five to seven years experience in campaign/initiative management, PR, marketing, journalism or other communications work
  5. Familiarity with both print and electronic media formats
  6. Ability to travel up to 20% of time annually (domestic)
  7. Experience with and commitment to working in a very diverse workforce
  8. Familiarity with Lutheranism, church structures, and church member motivations and sensitivities preferred.
  9. Demonstrated strong analytical skills. Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem, determine whether it is ripe for intervention and identify the means to address it. A strong commitment to producing measurable results.
  10. Able to set short- and long-term planning goals in line with program strategy. Ability to analyze budgetary information and assess organizational capacity. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
  11. Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes. Excellent listening skills. Highly articulate.
  12. Seasoned judgment, able to make decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
  13. Able to adapt to a complex working environment in which influence is often exerted indirectly rather than through traditional chain of command hierarchies. Successful experience in leveraging ideas and creating projects that produce measurable results.
  14. Previous experience with a public charity involved in global health issues is strongly preferred, but not required.
