Director of Marketing

Description:The Director of Marketing works closely with the Vice-President for External Relations, LWR leadership and staff to analyze current outreach initiatives; determine fundraising, communication and marketing priorities; and direct staff as necessary to accomplish assigned missions in service of LWR audience engagement strategies. These comprehensive marketing strategies generate revenue, strengthen the LWR brand, reinforce current outreach efforts, expand outreach to new constituent groups, and quantify the effectiveness of LWR's outreach to external audiences.
Duties: 
  1. Responsible and accountable for engaging U.S. Lutherans effectively in the work of LWR and ensuring that LWR's work in marginalized communities is of the highest quality and integrity.
  2. Sets the strategic direction for LWR's marketing efforts.
  3. Ensures alignment of LWR's mission, vision, values and position statement with a marketing mix that is compelling, relevant, measurable and effective.
  4. Promotes and oversees Lutheran World Relief branding in consultation with Vice-President for External Relations and Senior Director for Engagement, and in close coordination with in-house and/or freelance design resources.
  5. Designs, implements, and facilitates annual marketing plan for LWR. Leads and facilitates development and implementation of secondary marketing and fundraising plans for specific audiences.
  6. As a leader of the Development Team, collaborative with the Director for Constituent Engagement, Director for Philanthropic Engagement and relevant staff to create, manage, implement and monitor annual revenue goals and objectives for resource development and engagement among U.S. Lutheran constituencies.
  7. Oversees internal and external web sites, directing content development and engagement strategies on web and social media platforms.
  8. Analyzes LWR giving trends and provide gift revenue projections, guidance and recommendations to LWR leadership and Development Team as a basis for the organization's operating budget.
  9. Sets marketing goals that are consistent with External Relations and LWR objectives. Engages in a review process to ensure that marketing goals are being met and establish systems to adapt outreach efforts if goals are not being met.
  10. Supervises and motivates marketing area staff. Position will supervise Social Marketing Manager, Marketing Projects Manager, Database Manager and Program Assistant for Communication and Marketing.
  11. Creates and implements marketing and advertising plans designed to reach and/or exceed quarterly and yearly marketing and fundraising goals.
  12. Develops, monitors and analyzes results and effectiveness of marketing efforts; develops and executes adjustments as needed to meet marketing and External Relations goals.
  13. Communicates marketing campaigns to all relevant LWR staff and engages relevant staff in the execution of those campaigns.
  14. Identifies new promotional vehicles, ranging from traditional media to new media and social marketing possibilities, and implements strategies that harness these established and emergent marketing opportunities.
  15. Leads market analysis, develops and analyzes market surveys including donors and volunteers, and using data to inform engagement strategy.
  16. Develops and improves LWR's systems for acquisition of constituent information. When appropriate, creates and manages systems that result in LWR acquiring new supporters and supporter information.
  17. Develops new strategic relationships with marketing, advertising and communication vendors to expand LWR's capabilities and improve the quality of messaging.
  18. Oversees the planning and monitoring of marketing budgets.
  19. Engages in ongoing professional development.

Qualifications: 
  1. Deep commitment to LWR's core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
  2. BA in marketing, communications, or equivalent field. MBA or other graduate work preferred.
  3. At least five to seven years of experience, and a record of accomplishments and results in non-profit, cause-related or for-profit marketing and resource development.
  4. Demonstrated experience in leading a team of professionals to maximize individual initiative, accomplish strategic goals and collaborate for success.
  5. Broad knowledge of marketing, communications and resource development, especially direct response marketing, social marketing, peer or referral marketing, managing strategic relationships, constituent database analysis and donor relations.
  6. Applied experience in direct mail techniques and donor cultivation/relationship management strategy. Applied experience with a variety of marketing media including use of print, video, and web-based media applications.
  7. Demonstrated vendor management experience, including RFP management, contract development, and ongoing vendor supervision, especially as related to marketing and fundraising contractors. 
  8. Able to set short- and long-term planning goals in line with program strategy. Ability to analyze budgetary information and assess organizational capacity. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
  9. Demonstrated strong analytical skills. Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem, determine whether it is ripe for intervention and identify the means to address it. A strong commitment to producing measurable results.
  10. Able to adapt to a complex working environment in which influence is often exerted indirectly rather than through traditional chain of command hierarchies. Successful experience in leveraging ideas and creating projects that produce measurable results.
  11. Exceptional proficiency in using word processing, e-mail, and web-browser software. Applied experience with integrated CMS and CRM software, Blackbaud's The Raiser's Edge and Sphere, preferred.
  12. Ability to travel up to 20% percent of his/her time. 
  13. Experience with and commitment to working in a very diverse workforce.
  14. Familiarity with Lutheran church structures and church member motivations and sensitivities; previous work in faith-based context preferred.
