The Director of Constituent Engagement works closely with LWR leadership and staff to develop comprehensive strategies and systems to identify and engage U.S. Lutheran audiences in LWR programs. These comprehensive engagement strategies deepen relationships between LWR and U.S. Lutherans, steward the constituent relationship, increase retention and decrease attrition, strengthen the LWR brand, and expand LWR's profile and reach into new constituent groups.This position will develop, prioritize, and grow engagement initiatives, design and implement systems for facilitating an audience-centric experience; and direct staff as necessary to accomplish goals. The position sustains, strengthens and shapes Lutheran World Relief's constituency partnerships, including church wide women's organizations, Fair Trade and vendor organizations, congregations and congregational groups.
Duties:
Responsible and accountable for engaging U.S. Lutherans effectively in the work of LWR and ensuring that LWR's work in marginalized communities is of the highest quality and integrity. Work within External Relations department and relevant areas throughout the organization to set the strategic direction for compelling, relevant, measurable and effective engagement strategies, ensuring alignment of LWR's mission, vision, values, directional goals and position statement.
Design, facilitate and implement annual overall engagement plan. Communicate and collaborate with VP for External Relations and departments within LWR to ensure that engagement plans coordinate with all externally-focused and system operations. Set engagement goals that are consistent with External Relations and LWR objectives and undertake review process to ensure that engagement goals are being met. Adapt outreach efforts if goals are not being met.
Serve as one of LWR's key, senior spokespersons. With the President and CEO, VP for External Relations and Director of Marketing, set the standard for LWR's representation and speaking. Also represent LWR in relationships with Lutheran church bodies, communities of faith, and peer organizations.
Identify and develop proposals for new strategic engagement projects or initiatives that will advance the organization toward meeting its Directional Goals; oversee development of appropriate promotional and educational materials relating to those projects, monitoring of results and adjustments to meet the goals.
Collaborate with the VP for ER, Director of Marketing, Director for Philanthropic Engagement and relevant staff to create, manage, implement and monitor annual revenue goals and objectives for resource development and engagement, and to develop, manage and implement agency-wide fundraising strategies among U.S. Lutheran constituencies.
Oversee constituent services systems, including the fulfillment of resources, in-bound call center services and gift acknowledgement and receipting process.
Sustain, strengthen and shape LWR's organizational relationships with Women of the ELCA and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League at all points of engagement.
Develop and implement strategies for high-impact presence at national and key regional and parish events, ensuring the organization's core messages are clearly communicated, and methods are in place to capture constituent information and interests for including them in direct mail efforts.
Develop, manage and be accountable to annual engagement budget, including Budget Variance Analysis at regular intervals.
Supervise, counsel, and support direct report staff in the development and promotion of new engagement initiatives. Complete all supervisory duties outlined by Human Resources.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Familiarity and compliance with LWR's safety and security procedures and protocols.
Contribute to LWR's New Business Development initiatives.
Ensure compliance with laws and LWR policies on public policy and advocacy activities and time spent on lobbying activities.
Monitor laws relevant to nonprofit sector, and coordinate any necessary changes to job description with supervisor, HR, and EVP.
Qualifications:
Deep commitment to LWR's core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
At least five to seven years of experience, and a record of accomplishments and results in customer service, community organizing, public relations or
BA in communications, education, marketing or equivalent field. Graduate work preferred. Lutheran theological education and/or homiletic experience an asset.
Strong familiarity with Lutheran theology, church structures, and church member motivations and sensitivities; previous work in church context (especially Lutheran) highly preferred.
Superior oratory skill and the ability to speak compellingly and with ease to a wide range of audiences, clearly articulating Lutheran motivation and grounding for the work of LWR. Excellent writing skills with a promotional, compelling tone that leads the reader to action.
Broad knowledge of marketing, communications and resource development. Applied experience in all areas of communication, including print and online media, and video preferred.
Strong leadership and consensus building skills, exhibited skills of diplomacy; ability to work productively with a wide array of different people and institutions that may disagree and could be in competition with one another.
A task-oriented style with focus on achieving clear and ambitious short- and long-term goals in line with program strategy. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and manage multiple priorities by maintaining a high level of organization.
Creativity, imagination, problem-solving skills, and the ability to adjust direction and strategies.
Ability to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy. Seasoned judgment, ability to make decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
Demonstrated vendor management experience, including RFP management, contract development, and ongoing vendor supervision, especially as related to marketing, fulfillment and fundraising contractors.
Exceptional proficiency in using word processing, e-mail, and web-browser software.
Applied experience with integrated CMS and CRM software, Blackbaud's The Raiser's Edge and Sphere, preferred.
Experience with and commitment to working in a very diverse workforce.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 20% percent of the time.
